Growing Guide & FAQ
Growing Bangladeshi vegetables in the USA
Bangladesh and the US have very different climates, but with a little planning you can grow lau, begun, korola, lal shak, and more in almost any US zone. Here's how.
Reading our sowing windows
Every Deshi Sprout product page lists a Sowing Time taken from the Bangladesh planting calendar. To adapt it to your zone:
- USDA Zones 9–11 (Florida, South Texas, Southern California, Arizona): Closest to Bangladesh climate. Follow the listed sowing window directly.
- USDA Zones 7–8 (most of the South, Mid-Atlantic, Pacific Northwest): Shift the window to mid-spring through early fall. Start gourds and chilies indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost.
- USDA Zones 5–6 (Midwest, Northeast): Start most varieties indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost. Transplant after night temperatures stay above 60°F.
- USDA Zones 3–4 (Northern Plains, New England): Stick with fast-maturing varieties (lal shak, korola, kacha morich). Use raised beds and row covers.
What grows easiest for first-timers?
- Lal shak (red amaranth) — ready in 30–35 days, grows in any container.
- Dhonepata (coriander) — cool-season, fast harvest.
- Pui shak (Indian spinach) — loves heat, productive all summer.
- Lau (bottle gourd) — needs a sturdy trellis but very prolific.
Seed germination tips
- Soak gourd and bean seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours before planting to speed germination.
- Use seed-starting mix (not garden soil) for indoor starts.
- Keep soil consistently warm — 75–85°F — for best germination of tropical varieties.
- For chilies and eggplant, use a heat mat under the seed tray.
Frequently asked questions
Are these seeds GMO?
No. All Deshi Sprout seeds are conventional open-pollinated or F1 hybrid varieties bred by Lal Teer Seed Ltd. of Bangladesh. None are genetically modified.
How many seeds per packet?
Packet counts vary by variety. Smaller seeds like amaranth and coriander have hundreds of seeds; larger seeds like gourds typically have 10–20 per packet — more than enough for a home garden.
Can I save seeds from these plants?
Yes for open-pollinated varieties (clearly marked on every product page). F1 hybrids won't grow true from saved seed — you'll need to buy fresh packets each season.
What if my seeds don't germinate?
Germination depends on many factors including soil temperature, moisture, and planting depth. If you've followed best practices and gotten poor results, email us at deshisprout@gmail.com with details and we'll make it right.
Do you ship internationally?
Currently we ship within the USA only. We hope to expand to Canada in the future.
Why are some descriptions in Bengali?
We use Bengali names (lau, begun, korola, etc.) alongside English to honor the cultural origin of these varieties and help you find what you're looking for.
